Most people look at diving in Saskatchewan as an unpleasant experience. This misconception is far from the truth. Consistently diving in cold water has many benefits.
When diving in cold water, particularly in Saskatchewan, we must always maintain situational awareness and communicate well with our buddies.
When we factor in all the conditions, we compensate for thick wet-suits/dry-suits, decreased mobility, extra weight, thermal conditions, and limited visibility. These factors force us to engage with our instruments and buddies. When we engage with our instruments, we don’t rely on how we feel or what we see. These skills are invaluable to having a safe and enjoyable dive. When a diver uses these skills often, they can quickly transfer them into the tropical environment where many of the challenges we adapt to do not exist.
Lastly, many adventures can be experienced only in Saskatchewan. Drift diving in the Saskatchewan River downstream of the Diefenbaker and Codette dams. Observing large lake trout during their spawn at Whiteswan and Little Bear Lakes. The unique boulders of Little Bear Lake. The submerged forest in Diefenbaker Lake. The Morin Lake wall. The list continues.
Your local dive stores and clubs can help you experience these Saskatchewan Gems.
